Alabama vs West Virginia College Football Preview

The West Virginia Mountaineers, newcomers to the Big-12, face off against the 2nd ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on a neutral site, the Georgia Dome. Alabama is coming off a Sugar Bowl loss to the Sooners of the Big-12. During the offseason head coach Nick Saban claimed that the Crimson Tide didn’t put their whole heart into the game because it wasn’t a national championship. Alabama will be out to prove that they have recovered from their bowl loss and are ready to defeat any opponents, especially Big-12 opponents that come between them and the new NCAA playoff system. The Mountaineers face an uphill battle with much of the Alabama defense returning for 2014. Many critics have looked at this game as a potential trap game for the Crimson Tide. Although Alabama certainly does excellent recruiting, many of the Crimson Tide starters on offense don’t have the experience to make another national title run.

Keys for the West Virginia Mountaineers:

  • The mountaineers really had a Jekyll and Hyde team that won their opening game, and then had quality wins over Oklahoma State and Texas Christian.
  • West Virginia had a pair of quarterbacks that took the majority of the snaps under center for the Mountaineers. Clint Trickett and Paul Millard combined for 13 touchdowns as well as 13 interceptions. West Virginia really needs to find stability in a single QB if they want to get back to their winning ways.

Keys for the Alabama Crimson Tide:

  • With the loss of A.J. McCarron Nick Saban will have to start a young QB to the position that McCarron held for four years, winning 2 national championships.
  • Blake Sims and Jacob Coker will be battling for the starting job all the way until game time on Saturday. Coach Saban won’t let on who the starter is going to be, making this first game an important one for Crimson Tide fans.

Coach Nick Saban had some comments during the offseason about his shocking loss to the Sooners at the Sugar Bowl. This year he will have to back up his words by placing his young players in the light for the first time. The Mountaineers will be looking to take advantage of a young squad early in the game. Alabama fans will be expecting their team to be one of the four selected for the new NCAA playoff format.
