Appalachian State vs Michigan College Football Preview

The Appalachian State Mountaineers travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines and they will again be looking for an upset. A rematch of the infamous 2007 matchup which saw Appalachian State shock the football world with their opening day victory at the big house. Both teams are in strikingly different situations then the last time that they faced each other, both teams seem to be struggling. Michigan got off to an excellent season in 2013 that included a strong victory over Notre Dame. But because of injuries they struggled toward the end of their season and eventually lost their bowl game to Kansas State. Appalachian State will again be looking for an upset, even if they haven’t been having the success they did back in 07’. The Mountaineers had a disappointing 2013, but 2014 could be a different story.  -Keys for Appalachian State Mountaineers:

  • Running back Marcus Cox comes back to the Mountaineers this season looking to add to his totals from last season. Last year Cox nearly ran for 1,300 yards and scored 15 touchdowns. If he is able to get free early he could bring the defense in closer and open up the passing game.
  • Kameron Bryant will again retain the QB position for the Mountaineers looking to improve on his 2,700+ yards against the Wolverine DB’s

-Keys for Michigan Wolverines

  • Devin Gardner once again handles the QB position; the question with Gardner always is whether or not he can stay healthy. Last year Gardner had nearly 3000 yards passing and almost 500 yards rushing additionally. If Gardner can stay healthy and keep his turnovers to a minimum there’s no reason why Michigan won’t win.
  • The Wolverines lost several of their key starters but were able to hang on to the speedy Devin Funchess. Last year Funchess was second on the team with 49 receptions for 748 yards. Funchess needs to be aware that his QB does plenty of scrambling to keep the play alive and its his job to adjust to where Gardner escapes to.

  • Marcus Cox: Questionable

–Favorite/Odds: Michigan by 34.5 points

Michigan fans want this game. Ever since that 2007 matchup, Wolverine fans have wanted revenge. Appalachian State beating Michigan was a game that literally shocked just about everyone that heard about it. Appalachian State winning this game would be an even greater shock to the football world.
