Boston College vs Massachusetts College Football Preview

The Boston College Eagles of the ACC conference take on the Massachusetts Minutemen at Gillette Stadium. Boston College had an up and down season in 2013. They won their first two games over Villanova and Wake Forest before they dropped two in a row. The Eagles were 7-5 during their regular season, earning a bowl bid against Arizona, which they lost to finish 7-6 on the year. Head coach Steve Addazio will have to find replacements for their starting QB and their starting rusher. This interstate matchup pits two teams against each other that know each other very well. Much of the coaching staff for both teams have spent time working with one another across the nation. The winner might be decided by which team decides to take the most risks.

Keys for UMass Minutemen:

  • Umass’s only win last year came against Miami (OH) by a score of 17-10. If they can find a way to limit their opponents scoring they stand more of a chance to win more then one game.
  • UMASS had six games in 2013 where they scored 10 points or less, this is unacceptable for a team that wants to win multiple games.

Keys for the Boston College Eagles:

  • Head coach Addazio has already said that there will be plenty of freshmen starting in this opening game. Addazio has to build his team back to the status with which they played last season, he needs to make sure that these freshman don’t succumb to the pressure of being in their first game.
  • BC lost their starting QB, RB, and best wide receiver in at the end of 2013. Josh Bordner now gets the start at WR for the Eagles after three years of backup play at QB. Bordner made the transition to wide receiver in 2014 after serving as the backup quarterback for three years. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound product from Sykesville, Md., was 4-for-8, throwing for 61 yards and also ran for 100 yards on nine career carries, scoring two touchdowns in 2011.

o   Bobby Swigert (2 weeks)

o   David Dudek (Questionable)

–Favorite/Odds: Boston College by 17 points

This instate rivalry will surely have an intense atmosphere for a week one game. Boston College is trying to get back into bowl contention and win their game this time around. UMass will surely be well prepared for Boston College because many of the coaches have spent time together with different organizations. But come game time they won’t know each other until a winner is decided.
