California vs Northwestern College Football Preview

The California Golden Bears travel to face the Northwestern Wiildcats at Ryan Field. The Golden Bears had an abysmal 2013 season, winning just a single game against Portland State. These two teams met in their opener last year, where Northwestern defeated Cal 44-30. Northwestern won their first four games before they lost seven straight and failed to get to a bowl game at 5-7.This game should be a tough matchup for both sides, with both sides coming into the game in a better situation then they were in last year. Whoever wins will have a full steam of confidence going in to the rest of the season.

Keys for the California Golden Bears:

  • Quarterback Jared Goff will be going in to his second season with 3508 yards passing and 18 touchdowns. Those are good numbers for a freshman and Goff should know this offense by now. If head coach Sonny Dykes has done a good job with this young QB then the golden bears should win more then one game.
  • WR Chris Harper he led Cal in receiving yards (852) in 2013 and tied for team lead in touchdown receptions (5), while ranking second in receptions (70) and tied for second in scoring (30) – all career highs.

Keys for Northwestern

  • QB Trevor Siemian will enter his final season with the Wildcats. Last season Siemian improved his numbers from last season to 2149 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also had 9 interceptions, which is not a good ratio to have.
  • Senior RB Treyvon Green had 13 touchdowns last season for the Wildcats and will likely bare most of the rushing responsibilities.

  • Northwestern

o   Christian Jones WR

o   Venric Mark RB

–Favorite/Odds: Northwestern by 11 points

Northwestern will certainly be favored in this game at home. With that the pressure will be on them, even though Cal desperately needs a win. Both teams will know each other well by know and its really any ones game. The Northwestern crowd is sure to let the Golden Bears hear it throughout the game.
