Cleveland Cavaliers: Andrew Wiggins Tells Bill Self He Wants To Be Traded

wigginsAccording to Cleveland Cavaliers Andrew Wiggins’ former head coach at Kansas, Bill Self, Wiggins thinks it would be better for his long term career success to be traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of a trade that would send Timberwolves All Star power forward Kevin Love to the Cavs.

“When all this trade stuff started, I talked to Andrew and Andrew told me, ‘I hope I get traded,'” Self said. “And I’m like, ‘No you don’t.’ And he said, ‘Coach, I do. It’s better for me, knowing my personality and what I need to do, to go somewhere where I’m forced to be something as opposed to going in there where they’re going to be patient with me and I’m going to be a piece.'”

Earlier this week, it was reported that an agreement had been reached between the Cavs and Timberwolves that would give the Wolves Anthony Bennett, the Cavs 2015 1st round draft pick, and Andrew Wiggins in exchange for Kevin Love.

The deal, if it is true that the terms have been agreed to in principle, cannot become official until August 23rd, exactly 30 days after Wiggins signed his rookie contract. Due to an NBA rule rookies may not be traded until 30 days after they sign their rookie contract.

“Even though in a weird way everybody would love the opportunity to play with LeBron because you’re guaranteed winning,” Self said, “for the longevity of his career, he needs to develop that mindset to be the guy, for him to be great, and I think being Minnesota will help him do that.”

With the trade seemingly certain, Wiggins has a strong outlook on the potential good the trade will do for his long term career.

The trade will almost certainly make the Cavaliers have strong odds to reach, perhaps even win this years NBA Finals, and help the Timberwolves along with their rebuilding process.
