Colgate vs Ball State College Football Preview

The FCS Patriot conference Colgate Raiders take on the Cardinals of Ball State in Scheumman Stadium. Ball State dominated its season opener against Illinois State 51-28. The Cardinals won seven games in a row during their regular season on their way to a 10-2 record. Unfortunately Ball State was defeated by Arkansas State in the GoDaddy bowl game. Ball State head coach Pete Lembo will have to find another quarterback to fit his west coast offense. Colgate is looking to rebound from a disappointing 4-8 season against a relatively young Cardinal team.

Keys for the Colgate Raiders:

  • First year head coach Dan Hunt will be trying to read the talent on his team so that he can make adjustments in the time to come. Many of the strategic coaching decisions happen after the first few games of the season.
  • The Colgate defense will be switching to a 3-4 in hopes of putting pressure on the QB and ensures that the defense is more active and responsive.

Keys for the Ball State Cardinals:

  • With loss of their experienced quarterbacks Jamill Smith and Keith Wenning, head coach Pete Lembo needs to find a suitable underclassman that can handle the pressure.
  • Whoever the QB may be he will have the 2nd best receiver returning in Jordan Williams. Last season Williams had 72 catches for over 1000 yards.
  • Ball State’s offense supported the defense last year, but this year the defense has plenty of returning experience.

Favorite/Odds: Ball State by 30 points

Ball State took a tumble early in the season against North Texas last year, otherwise they may have been a contender for an at-large BCS bid. Other then the UNT lost, only Northern Illinois was able to defeat the cardinals. This year the expectations will be a bit higher for the Cardinals, but their improbability last year probably got them some decent recruits. We will see what Ball State team shows up week one.
