Hampton vs Old Dominion College Football Preview

The Hampton Pirates sail to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs at S.B. Ballard Stadium. The pirates are looking to rebound from a 4-8 record in the FCS Mid Eastern Athletic Conference. The Old Dominion Monarchs were able to go 8-4 behind one of the best passing offenses in the nation, but they were unable to secure a bowl bid. Old Dominion averaged 359 yards passing per game and scored 42 points per game as an average. Opponents like Hampton won’t impress anyone, so Old Dominion will have to do their best to run up the score and not allow the pirates to steal any points.

-Keys for the Hampton Pirates:

  • Jorrian Washington returns for the pirates at running back. Last year he led the team in carries (115) and rushing yards (699). Washington will have to have better numbers if the pirates hope to go anywhere.
  • Bryan Bailey also returns at QB, last year he had 1131 yards with nine touchdowns and eight interceptions. He will certainly have to do better and make smarter decisions for the pirates.

Keys for the Old Dominion Monarchs:

  • Old Dominion had the 5th best offense in the nation last year behind quarterback Taylor Heinicke. He returns to the monarchs with over 4000 yards passing and 33 touchdowns, while only throwing 8 interceptions. He will certainly have hopes to have a similar offense.
  • Head coach Bobby Wilder will have to win a few more key games in order to get a bowl game bid for the monarchs.

Favorite/Odds: Old Dominion by 49 points

Old Dominion feels they deserved a bowl game last year, and they will be out for blood this year to prove themselves to the nation. Hampton struggled in the FCS last year and playing an FBS opponent certainly won’t help their chances. Hampton will know about the offense they are facing and they will be doing everything in their power to stop it.
