New Orleans Pelicans Anthony Davis Vital To Team USA

NBA NewsThe New Orleans Pelicans’ center Anthony Davis is set to be a crucial part of Team USA and any success they will have in the FIBA World Cup, starting at the end of August.

Team USA, as always, will have an incredible depth at the guard positions, but will lack that same depth when it comes to big men. That situation was only made more true this year as fellow big men, Blake Griffin, Kevin Love, and LaMarcus Aldridge will all not be playing, Griffin due to injury.

That leaves Anthony Davis to shoulder much of the load defensively and on the boards that Team USA will need to excel at.

Luckily for Team USA, this isn’t the first time Davis will participate in international competition. When Davis was first drafted in 2012 he was a last minute addition to the roster in response to a Blake Griffin knee injury. Davis went on to mostly warm the bench during the London Olympics.

Though not getting much playing experience, Davis became familiar with the style and personnel on Team USA.

Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski had this to say, “What was a bad situation two years ago turned out to be lucky,” Coach K continued, “”His comfort level with us helps him tremendously right now. He was exposed to that level of talent with Carmelo, LeBron and Kobe that year. He has to play a huge role for us.”

“All of [2012] has helped and played a part in the role for me this year,” Davis said. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in myself. We have a lot of talent, but we also know it’s going to be a battle.”

With the FIBA World Cup starting on August 30th in Spain, watch for Davis to be a major contributor throughout the competition.
