Notre Dame vs Rice College Football Preview

Notre Dame Football

The Rice Owls travel to Indiana to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Rice faced a tough SEC opponent in Texas A&M in their season opener of 2013, after they lost they went on to a 10-3 record culminating in their bowl game loss to Mississippi State. But Rice had to do a significant amount of rebuilding for the 2014 season in order to continue to win football games. Notre Dame has been rocked by the recent breaking news about academic fraud that was committed by several Irish players. The Irish lost 3 players to suspension and head coach Brian Kelley will have to find replacements. Ordinarily the Irish would certainly run over a team like Rice, but with the recent scandal and the downward slope of the Irish since losing in the national championship game a few years ago. Rice certainly has a good enough team to give Notre Dame a run for their money.

-Keys for the Rice Owls:

  • Senior wide receiver Jordan Taylor is on many watch lists throughout the nation. Last season Taylor led his team in receptions (55), receiving yards (848), and receiving touchdowns (8). Taylor is a large target at 6’5” and whichever QB is starting will be looking to throw his way.

Keys for Notre Dame Fighting Irish:

  • Senior QB Everett Golson is going to have to lead his team on the field and off the field as well. The fighting Irish will be a young squad in 2014 and they will need leadership.
  • Notre Dame’s scandal will be talked about off the field quite a bit, but it is head coach Brian Kelley needs to make sure that it remains off the field and keep his players minds’ focused on the game.

–Injuries:

  • Rice

o   TE Connor Cella (ribs)

  • Notre Dame

o   LB Ishak Williams (suspension)

Favorite/Odds: Notre Dame by 21 points

The Fighting Irish will need to push pass recent controversy in order to make sure Rice can’t come to their house and steal a game. Hopefully the first game will bring a sigh of relief to Notre Dame fans and players alike. Rice will be looking to capitalize with a decent squad of players returning to play in 2014.
