Police Arrest Third Suspect in Murder of Aspen Socialite

On Saturday authorities in Aspen, Colorado said a third person had been arrested in the death of a socialite in the resort town, more than a full week after a man and woman who had rented the home of the socialite were taken into police custody.

On Friday, Katherine Carpenter who is 56 was detained by police in the death of 57-year old Nancy Pfister, said the Office of the Pitkin County Sheriff. Carpenter was held with no bond on the suspicion of murder in the first degree and on conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree.

Pfister was the late Art and Betty Pfister’s daughter. The couple was longtime well known prominent residents of Aspen who were co-founders of the Buttermilk ski area that is west of Aspen, which has been host to the Winter X Games a number of times.

Pfister’s body was located in a closet upstairs at her home on February 26. However, investigators have been silent about how or when she had been killed.

Authorities said William Styler III who is 65 and 62-year old Nancy Styler were arrested at a Basalt lodge March 3. The two had been staying at that lodge after they had apparently moved out of the socialite’s home on February 22. That was the day that Pfister returned to her home following a vacation she took to Australia, said authorities.

The Stylers, who are spouses, will be charged on Monday with murder in the first degree and conspiracy to commit murder in the first degree.

Authorities have said that the couple had rented Pfister’s residence last fall.

Joe DiSalvo, the Sheriff said there have been a few problems during the ongoing investigation. It is the county’s first homicide in over a decade, not counting cases classified as being murder-suicides.

Aspen is located approximately 100 miles to the southwest of the Denver. It is a ski resort that is located in the Rocky Mountains. The town has been considered a location for the rich and famous for a number of years with multimillion dollar homes and condos in the area.
