Bowling Green Vs Western Kentucky College Football Week-1 Preview & Analysis.

Bowling-Green-vs-Western-Kentucky

The Bowling Green Falcons (MAC) will be travelling to play Western Kentucky (C.USA) at L.T. Smith Stadium. Bowling Green surprised many of its critics last season and came out with a very strong defense as well as a balanced and offense. Although the reached a bowl game in 2013, the Falcons lost the game and will be trying to go bowling again in 2014, looking for redemption. The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers were unable to acquire a bowl bid in 2013 even with an offense that averaged over 500 total yards per game. The Hilltoppers lost a few key offensive players, but retained their talented quarterback. This game should be a close one to the very end and will most likely be decided by the team that doesn’t turn the ball over.

–Keys for Bowling Green Falcons:

  • The Falcon passing game should be able to stretch defenses, and with Matt Johnson returning at QB, the Falcons have an experienced player under center. Last season Johnson threw for 25 touchdowns and almost 3,500 yards passing.
  • Junior RB Travis Greene is a perfect balance for Bowling Greens offense. Greene rushed for 1,500+ yards and had 11 touchdowns. These stats will help compliment the aerial game of Bowling Green.
  • Bowling Green had the 5th best defense last season with regard to opponent point average. If this defense shows up again it will be hard to score on Bowling Green.

–Keys for Western Kentucky Hilltoppers:

  • Senior QB Brandon Doughty returns and will be looking for redemption. Last season as a Hilltopper, Doughty threw 14 interceptions to match his 14 touchdowns. If Doughty can find a way to make smarter throws he might limit his turnovers.
  • With the loss of Antonio Andrews, Willie McNeal will need to step up his game even more. McNeal led his team in receptions last year, but only netted 599 yards. He has even more responsibility and will need some help from the younger players.

–NO KEY INJURIES TO DATE

–Favorite/Odds: Bowling Green by 8 points.

–This game could be one of the closest games of week one with the way both of these defenses acted last season. Points could be hard to come by and it might boil down to something like special teams.
