Jacksonville St. vs Michigan St. College Football Week-1 Preview & Analysis.

Jacksonville State vs Michigan State college football

A Big Ten powerhouse in Michigan State starts their season off against FCS opponents the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. The Michigan State Spartans head into the 2014 season ranked 8th in the nations preseason polls, and high hopes from the coaching staff. With one of the best defenses in the nation last year, the Spartans have been building a defense that they believe wins championships. Unfortunately the Spartans lost a few key defensive players that have hopefully been replaced by Mark Dantonio’s recruiting. Jacksonville State will certainly have its hands full when facing a Spartan defense that allowed less the 14 points per game.

–Keys for Jacksonville State Gamecocks:

  • Obviously the Gamecock offense will struggle against one of the nations top defenses; but, if Jacksonville State can play well on special teams and fight for field position, they could buy time on offense.
  • Senior RB DeMarcus James scored an impressive 29 rushing touchdowns last season, something he hopes to add to in 2014. Him and QB Eli Jenkins will be looking to upset their FBS opponents.

–Keys for Michigan State Spartans:

  • Defense is the key for the Spartans; however, QB Conner Cook knows how to play football. Often overlooked because of the strong defense, Cook led his team last season with 22 touchdowns compared to only 6 interceptions. Cook and Senior RB Jeremy Langford can spread the field and open up defenses with precision
  • Senior QB Conner Cook is often overlooked when in the shadow of the Spartan Defense. Last season Cook lit it up with 22 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions. He and Senior RB Jeremy Langford will be looking to tear through the Gamecocks defense and prove themselves.

–Favorite/Odds: Michigan State by 13.5 points

–Defense wins championships according to some, those some including the Michigan State Spartans. If Michigan State can once again dominate defensively and set their offense up in good field position, they will be looking for a spot in the NCAA championship playoff. But first they must not overlook this Gamecock team that did quite well last season in the FCS.
